From a single cracked tile to a full bathroom — what drives the price of tiling work.
Repairs versus full projects
Small tiling repairs — a few cracked tiles, a failed grout line, perished silicone — start from around R700 and are priced as a job rather than per square metre. Full tiling projects are quoted per square metre after measuring, because the surface underneath matters as much as the tiles going on top.
What raises the rate
Tiling is a preparation trade. These factors move the price most:
- Removing old tiles and disposing of rubble
- Levelling or screeding an uneven floor
- Large-format tiles, which need flatter substrates
- Diagonal or pattern layouts and heavy cutting
- Waterproofing in showers and wet areas
The cheapest bathroom upgrade there is
Regrouting and replacing silicone costs a fraction of retiling and makes a tired bathroom read as maintained. For landlords preparing a unit for a new tenant it is consistently the best return per rand spent.
