Why two painting quotes for the same room can differ by thousands, and what you should actually be comparing.
Labour and paint are two different costs
Room painting labour typically starts from around R1,500 for a standard bedroom in Gauteng. Paint, filler, tape and sheeting are additional and depend entirely on the product chosen. A premium washable interior paint can cost double a contractor-grade equivalent.
Preparation is where quotes diverge
A cheap quote usually means less preparation. Filling cracks, sanding, sealing stains and priming bare plaster take hours that do not show up in a photograph but decide whether the finish survives two summers.
When comparing quotes, ask each contractor exactly what preparation is included and how many coats are quoted.
- Number of coats quoted
- Crack filling and sanding included or excluded
- Ceilings and trim included or excluded
- Furniture moving and floor protection
- Who supplies the paint
Exterior painting on the Highveld
Gauteng’s UV exposure and summer storms are hard on exterior coatings. Painting is best done in the dry autumn and winter months, and skimping on wall preparation or a suitable primer is the most common reason an exterior repaint fails early.
